Malaysia’s MOE equips teachers with ICT skills

Malaysia’s Ministry of Education collaborated with various agencies to equip teachers with ICT knowledge and skills.

The move is in line with the National Education Blueprint to transform the country’s education system.

Last week, over 200 teachers from 80 primary and secondary schools in parts of Malaysia attended a “Malaysia ICT Volunteers (MIV) with School 2018” workshop. It was conducted by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

The MIV program aims to benefit over 10,000 schools in the country, according to MCMC community engagement department director Hashimah Hashim. The first phase of the program will go on until 2020, she added.

MCMC will hold a survey on the program to determine its impact on schools and the larger community, she told a press conference at a Teachers Training Institute in Kuching, Sarawak.

The program is an initiative by the government to provide teachers with ICT know-how and values and pass them on to students, reported the Borneo Post.

MIV will also serve as a campaign to impart the right values among students, said assistant director of Education Media and Innovation Unit of the Education Technology Division Sarawak Mohd Meeraj Abdul Rahman.

“Towards this end, we hope that students will be more mindful with the usage of ICT while having the knowledge necessary to handle scammers and hackers,” Hashimah said.
