Minister urges teachers to be tech savvy

In preparation for the digital era, teachers should equip themselves with knowledge in all fields, urged Malaysia’s education minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

Speaking to graduates from the Teachers' Training Institute at the 2018 National Leadership Convention for Graduate Teachers, he said that it is not enough for teachers of the future to only master the process of teaching and learning in classrooms.

Teachers need to also be knowledgeable in all aspects, especially in technology developments, to ensure that they do not get left behind.

"Today's graduates need to be digital-savvy, they need to think how to face a world that has moved from text books to being paperless," Khalid said.

Khalid’s comments are in line with the Malaysian government’s plans to overhaul the country’s education system to better prepare students for an increasingly digital world. The changes will be presented at the upcoming general election and focus on helping students develop relevant skill sets for the future workplace.

After attending a celebration held by the ministry of education's Psychology and Counselling Department, Khalid added that the ministry would study the establishment of a one-stop training centre for teachers in schools, reported Bernama.
