School admin calls for calm after shooting

Last week, a man was fatally shot at a bus stop of a primary school in Malaysia’s prominent state of Selangor. School resumed a day after the incident.

The school administration called for calm and students and staff have been assured that the matter is being handled by the police.

At around 5.45pm on Thursday, police were alerted of the incident. They arrived at the scene of the crime about five minutes later to find the victim and an injured passer-by.

The passer-by was struck by a stray bullet but is currently in stable condition after seeking treatment at the hospital.

The police are currently conducting investigations.

School resumed as usual on Friday morning, with parents dropping off their children at the school gate and a school guard managing traffic.

The police have also ramped up patrols in the area and were spotted several times on Friday morning.

Requests to the Ministry of Education for the addition of a closed-circuit television (CCTV) system have been rejected “due to budget restraints”.

The parent-teacher association believe installing a CCTV system on school premises would “dramatically increase school safety”, reported the Malay Mail.

Based on eyewitness accounts, the shooting seemed targeted rather than random.

The violent crime is the first of such incidents experienced in the largely peaceful area of Seri Kembangan.
