Singapore school on alert after wild boar attack

A secondary school principal told staff and students to be vigilant after an administrative employee at the school was attacked by a boar outside the school.

The employee was heavily injured on Tuesday (28 August) and admitted to the hospital.

“We will render her continued assistance, including giving her the time to recover from her wounds,” said Benedict Keh, principal at Punggol Secondary.

“We have reminded our staff and students to be vigilant and watchful of their surroundings. As an added precaution, we are working with the relevant authorities to ensure the safety of our staff and students.”

The animal ran into a nearby condominium after the incident but was eventually sedated and caught by the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES).

The incident was a first for the school, according to students who spoke to Straits Times.

One student said he first heard about the incident when a teacher sent a message to his class WhatsApp chat group. Other students were only aware of it after they read about it online.

Although not a common occurrence in Singapore, an expert on wildlife consultancy said the animal could have wandered away from its habitat as forested areas in Punggol have been cleared for housing development.
