On Monday, a public safety emergency caused more than 200 NSW schools to return to remote learning. This time it was not another outbreak of COVID-19, but extreme weather that has lashed the state so heavily that the Premier declared parts of it a ‘Natural Disaster area’.
More than 18,000 people have already been evacuated in the worst-hit parts of the state, and the Premier says a further 15,000 are at risk as conditions worsen.
As of this morning, the NSW Government has activated The State Emergency Operations Centre at Homebush, which works closely with other departments and agencies like Health, Transport and the emergency services, to ensure the safety of NSW residents in times of emergency.
“We advised yesterday about 18,000 people have been evacuated and regrettably we now have warnings for an additional 15,000 people that may need to be evacuated,” NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said in a statement.
“The extra areas of concern are around the river in the Hawkesbury but also the northern rivers area that was previously not as severe as the Mid North Coast”.
