Police suspect foul play in school blaze

A blaze that tore through a classroom and a canteen in a NSW school has been deemed suspicious by police.

The fire broke out at Buninyong Public School in the early hours of Sunday morning, but no one was hurt in the blaze, which destroyed six classrooms and the school’s canteen.

Officers from Orana Local Area Command attended and assisted Fire & Rescue NSW as they extinguished the blaze.

Police Inspector, Jay Pietruszka, from Orana Local Area Command told the ABC that the school holidays had bought forensic officers some time.

“We'd prefer it didn't happen at all, obviously,” Pietruszka said.

“But it gives us that time that we can now just start our enquiries and also allow the school time to address being without such classrooms for what will be an extended period of time.

“It's absolutely shocking what's occurred so our investigators will be on it and will be on it as long as they need to be.”

One of the buildings that were gutted was home to a special education classroom, and police say they expect the bill to run as high as $750,000.

A group of people were seen running from the scene shortly after the fire broke out.

Police are appealing for eyewitnesses to contact Crime Stoppers or the local police if they have any further information.
