University of Adelaide expands its reach

The year 2019 saw many school infrastructure expansions across Australia, and universities were no exception.

With the start of the next academic year, the University of Adelaide is starting 2020 strong with the opening of its new campus in Melbourne by July, just in time for the start of Trimester 2.

The new campus, which will be housed in Kaplan building at Docklands, will offer both undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

The University struck a partnership with London-based Kaplan for its newest addition, with the latter operating the Melbourne campus. Professor Peter Rathjen, University vice-chancellor, said the new campus will provide more opportunities for students to access “innovative, 21st century education.”

Kaplan has been the University’s partner since 2007 as its pathway college provider. In 2016, Kaplan’s status elevated, becoming the preferred pathway provider, Kaplan Australia managing director Rob Regan said.

“The new campus consolidates and extends the long-term partnership between our two educational institutions,” Regan said.

“At every step, both Kaplan and the University are focused on providing a quality education and student experience”.

Attracting a wider variety of students

“As we move towards our 150th year in 2024, the University of Adelaide is working to attract new students who otherwise might not have been able to study with us,” Professor Pascale Quester, University deputy vice-chancellor (academic), said.

While the Melbourne campus will initially be open to international students, Professor Quester said they are looking to attract a wider variety of student demographics such as those from the interstate, mature-age students, and even more online students.

“We are confident that the quality of education from the University of Adelaide will translate well into our Melbourne campus,” Professor Quester said.

“This is based on Kaplan’s already strong foundations which aim to assure academic standards and their commitment to providing students with a high-quality education experience”.

With the enrolment already open, the campus is so far offering the following degree programs:

  • Bachelor of Information Technology
  • Bachelor of Commerce
  • Bachelor of Accounting
  • Bachelor of Accounting and Corporate Finance
  • Bachelor of Corporate Finance
  • Master of Accounting
  • Master of Finance
  • Master of Professional Accounting, and
  • Master of Computing and Innovation.

“While modest in size compared to our existing campuses, the new Melbourne campus will broaden the reach of a University of Adelaide education in areas in which we excel,” Professor Rathjen said.

“It will further position our University as a leader in modern learning, and provide us with an entry point into the eastern states”.

Expecting the new campus to augments its current programs and campus-based student experience, Professor Rathjen also said the Melbourne campus can provide a venue for them to showcase their specialist knowledge such as wine and artificial intelligence.
