
Australian education providers expect artificial intelligence to create greater academic integrity challenges over the next two years, even as most institutions say they are prepared to respond.
According to ReadyTech’s AI & Innovation Benchmark 2026, 43.8% of 96 education organisations surveyed expect AI-related academic integrity issues to worsen over the next two years. About 73% already regard the issue as significant, very significant or critical.
AI integrity concerns on the rise
Despite those concerns, 77.1% said they were moderately or very prepared to respond to AI-related integrity challenges. Institutions are also introducing measures aimed at managing student use of the technology:
- 42.7% are implementing AI detection tools
- 32.3% are introducing student AI literacy programs
- 22.9% are establishing formal acceptable-use policies
The integrity concerns come as AI use becomes increasingly common across the sector. The survey found 94.8% of education organisations are either exploring or already using AI, while 28.1% use it regularly in at least one core workflow. More than four in 10 have deployed generative AI organisation-wide.
How institutions are responding
Forty per cent have used AI to automate a previously manual process and 37.5% use it for reporting or decision support.
Content creation and course development is currently the most common use case, cited by 43.8% of respondents. This is followed by student support chatbots at 28.1% and student management or learning management system reporting and analytics at 25%.
The survey covered senior education leaders responsible for technology, operations, teaching and learning, student administration and institutional strategy. Higher education providers accounted for 42.7% of education respondents, followed by private Registered Training Organisations.
Governance gaps remain a challenge
Governance is another concern as institutions expand their use of AI. About 34.4% of education organisations have a documented AI use policy and 30.2% have a responsible AI framework. Meanwhile, 11.5% reported having none of the governance measures listed in the survey.
Respondents also identified risks beyond academic misconduct. Fifty-four per cent rated loss of human oversight as high or critical risk; 50% flagged concern over sensitive data sent to external AI models. Inaccurate AI outputs were identified as a major risk by 47.9%.
These findings reflect broader pressures that Australian schools are still working through on AI governance and oversight, even as adoption accelerates across the sector.
Investment and opportunity ahead
At the same time, education organisations expect their investment in AI to continue growing. About 70.8% plan to increase spending over the next 12 months, while 67.7% regard AI as more of an opportunity than a threat.
Staff productivity was the most commonly identified area where AI could provide value, selected by 41.7% of respondents. Compliance and reporting and the automation of routine administrative work were each selected by 29.2%, while reducing operating costs ranked eighth at 16.7%.
There are signs of time savings, although measurement remains uneven. About 76.7% said AI-assisted work was faster than completing the same task manually, but more than 23% were not tracking measures such as improvements in speed.
“As AI becomes more widely adopted, the technology itself won’t be the competitive advantage – the real differentiator will be how effectively organisations convert AI investment into business value,” ReadyTech CEO Marc Washbourne said.
“Too many organisations still lack clear productivity baselines and don’t consistently measure the value AI delivers, making it difficult to demonstrate ROI or know where to invest next.”
What education providers are prioritising next
The report also found 83.3% of education respondents believe a unified data layer would improve AI outcomes. Meanwhile, 21.5% identified privacy, security and governance as the biggest obstacle to wider adoption.
Looking ahead, 37.5% identified having a single view of each student as the greatest future opportunity, while 34.4% nominated personalised learning pathways and 33.3% pointed to role-based operational intelligence.
These priorities point to a sector increasingly focused on AI-related academic integrity issues and the debate about how students use the technology as it becomes embedded across institutions.
