Revealed: Australia’s most sustainable schools

In May, The Educator announced the commencement of the first-ever 5-Star Sustainable Programs, in partnership with the Positive Education Schools Association (PESA), to recognise schools at the forefront of change.

Across Australia, schools are playing a critical role in equipping youth to be lifelong stewards of society and the environment. Recognising this, The Educator’s 5-Star Sustainable Programs aims to influence more schools and communities to follow suit in this growing movement.

Paul Murfitt, director of regions and community action at Sustainability Victoria, emphasised the need to have schemes relevant to a school’s culture.

“Through our experience running the ResourceSmart Schools program, each school is unique, and as a result, they need policies that help guide decision-making and advancements that are suitable for their community and their environment,” Murfitt told The Educator.

Between 11 May and 2 June, we asked schools to share their initiatives and showcase how they’re leading the sustainability charge. After considering a large number of submissions, 25 schools stood out from the rest as shining examples of effective sustainability education in action.

Below, The Educator reveals some of the winners.
