Sydney school closed after 'probable' COVID-19 case

Sydney school closed after

Rose Bay Public School in Sydney’s eastern suburbs has identified what it calls a “probable case” of COVID-19 on its campus, forcing the school to close for deep cleaning and contact tracing.

If confirmed, the case would be the first instance of community transmission in NSW in two weeks.

“We wish to advise you that Rose Bay Public School will be non-operational for on-site learning tomorrow Friday 12 June 2020,” the school said in a statement.

NSW Department Secretary Mark Scott said all students will undertake at home learning today while NSW Health investigates the matter.

So far, the Department hasn’t clarified whether the suspected case is a staff member or a student from the school.

Last month, a Year 7 student at Waverley College in Sydney and a Year 5 student at nearby Moriah College tested positive for COVID-19. This followed a Year 7 student at St Ignatius' College Riverview and a staff member at Werrington Public School testing positive for the virus just a week earlier.

The latest COVID-19 case comes as schools gradually ease restrictions. From Monday June 15, shorter school assemblies will be permitted, while choirs, dance classes and performing arts will be allowed to go ahead.
